You may not need to buy more iCloud storage just to move to a new iPhone. Apple offers temporary backup space to eligible buyers, and also supports direct transfer and computer backups.
The useful launch-week question is which route fits your situation. Someone keeping both phones for the weekend has different options from someone handing in the old phone before a replacement arrives.
Pick a route before paying for storage

Apple’s transfer overview documents these routes. Our recommendation is to choose around access to the old device, then check storage. A full cloud account does not by itself tell you which method is best.
Get the temporary iCloud backup
Apple’s temporary-storage instructions apply when you buy a new iPhone or iPad and lack sufficient iCloud backup space. Update the old device and have your Apple Account login ready.
- On the old iPhone, open Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Find Prepare for New iPhone, then select Get Started.
- Enable backup if prompted. Accept the extra storage offer when it appears.
- Let the backup finish before relying on it.
- During new-device setup, choose the iCloud restore option and the completed backup.
The restore window is 21 days. If delivery is delayed, Apple offers another 21 days through Keep My Backup Longer on the old device; contact support for further time. After restoration, the temporary backup remains for seven days.
This is a transfer allowance, not permanent additional storage. Keep the old phone until restoration is complete.
Direct transfer can fit a same-day upgrade
Quick Start offers a different route when both devices are available. Have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on the current phone, put the new one nearby and follow setup.
When choosing direct transfer, keep the phones close and connected to power until completion. Both devices remain occupied while the transfer runs. With an iCloud download, apps and data can continue arriving in the background.
For a practical decision, ask: do you need to use the old phone during the move, and will you keep both devices long enough to finish? Allow a quiet setup window rather than starting just before a trade-in appointment.
A completed backup and finished syncing are different
Apple explains that iCloud Backup covers information not already syncing to iCloud. If you use iCloud Photos, those photos sync separately rather than being duplicated in the daily device backup. Messages can work the same way when their iCloud syncing is enabled.
That distinction matters when checking the new phone. An app icon appearing does not tell you that its content has finished arriving. Inspect the things you would actually miss: recent photos, a recent conversation and documents you need offline.
Do not delete synced photos on the old phone as a way to “tidy up” the migration. Treat cleanup and transferring as separate jobs.
Check access before trading in
Our final check is deliberately small: open your main email, confirm the data you need and complete a fresh sign-in to an important account. Deal with anything missing while the old phone is still available.
