Dark Dimension IX is the current endgame roster test in Marvel Strike Force. It opened on April 15, 2026, requires Gear Tier 21 in every mission and awards Annihilus across the first and timed runs.
This MSF Dark Dimension 9 guide focuses on the decisions that matter before the first battle: which traits are used in each section, how many characters must be equipped, where the resource bottlenecks appear and what the two completions actually unlock.
If you want character recommendations rather than the requirement map, use our MSF Dark Dimension 9 teams guide. For the earlier modes and their unlock characters, start with our complete Dark Dimension overview.

Scopely’s official Dark Dimension IX announcement says players should expect to prepare about 25 total GT21 characters. That does not mean five entirely different characters for all 16 missions: the unrestricted opening and final missions can reuse eligible characters built for the trait sections.
Every mission must begin with five qualifying characters. Bringing one exceptional carry and four unfinished placeholders is not enough when the placeholders cannot enter at GT21.
What changed from Dark Dimension VIII?
Dark Dimension VIII used Purple Iso-8 Level 3 as its formal entry gate and recommended high gear without making a gear tier the universal requirement. DD9 returns to a direct gear check: every character used must be GT21.
The trait structure also changes. DD8 split City and Global into separate Hero and Villain sections before a Cosmic-or-Legendary finish. DD9 uses City, Cosmic and Global sections that exclude Mythic, Epic and Legendary characters, then gives Epic characters different access in the final specialist sections.
That distinction matters when reusing older investments. A powerful Mythic character may clear the unrestricted opening but cannot fill a City, Cosmic or Global slot that explicitly excludes Mythic characters.
How many characters do you need for DD9?
Plan around five characters for each of these groups:
- City, excluding Mythic, Epic and Legendary
- Cosmic, excluding Mythic, Epic and Legendary
- Global, excluding Mythic, Epic and Legendary
- Legendary or Villain Epic
- Mythic or Hero Epic
That creates the approximate 25-character roster in the official guidance. The first two unrestricted missions should use the strongest completed group rather than trigger another five-character investment. Mission 16 can do the same.
Do not raise all 25 characters at once. Finish the first restricted section before committing every resource to the fifth. New characters, reworks and event rewards can change the efficient choices while you are still farming GT21 pieces.
Best DD9 preparation order
1. Lock the City five first
City begins immediately after the two unrestricted missions. It is the safest section to complete first because those characters determine whether the run progresses beyond the opening.
Check each candidate’s origin gear and unique piece before promoting anyone. Two excellent characters competing for the same unique can delay the entire team more than a slightly weaker alternative with a clean gear path.
2. Map Cosmic and Global together
Cosmic and Global contain three missions each and arrive back to back. Build a simple sheet or note with every candidate’s origin—Bio, Tech, Skill, Mystic or Mutant—and the GT21 pieces still missing.
If City already consumes most of one origin, use Cosmic and Global alternatives that spread the remaining demand. The best theoretical team is not the best plan when four members wait for the same scarce item.
3. Delay the final specialist decision
Legendary, Epic and Mythic characters are often expensive. They can also receive new alternatives while a long gear farm is in progress. Reserve the needed uniques, but avoid equipping a final five months before the corresponding section unless those characters already provide value in Arena, Raids, War or Cosmic Crucible.
4. Use the official planner before equipping
Scopely provides a Dark Dimension Planner through the Marvel Strike Force website. Use it to confirm traits and GT21 gaps against your own roster. A written guide cannot see your inventory, equipped pieces or current stars; the planner can.
Gear Tier 21 planning without wasting resources
The formal requirement is simple, but the cost is not. Use these checks before every promotion:
- Confirm section eligibility. A City tag alone is not enough if the mission excludes a character’s Mythic, Epic or Legendary class.
- Count origin gear. Avoid a five-character lineup that concentrates every GT21 item in one origin unless inventory supports it.
- Count unique conflicts. Shared uniques can become the slowest part of an otherwise balanced team.
- Prefer dual-use characters. A character used in a current Raid, Arena or Crucible team repays the gear outside DD9.
- Protect catalysts. Origin pieces are visible bottlenecks, but catalysts can stop multiple promotions at once.
- Equip in mission order. City resources have practical value before Mythic resources because City is encountered first.
The aim is not to minimize the cost of each individual character. It is to get five functional characters into every section without creating a resource wall elsewhere.
Dark Dimension 9 first-run rewards
The first completion awards:
- Enough Annihilus shards for a 5-Yellow-Star unlock
- 2 Red Stars for Annihilus
- Gear and other roster-building resources earned across the run
Annihilus is a Mythic Villain with Cosmic, Tech and Blaster traits. His kit centers on the Cosmic Control Rod, barrier removal, minion summons, sustain and battlefield control. The reward is designed as a broadly useful endgame character rather than a trophy that works only inside Dark Dimension.
The official opening notice confirms that DD9 remains available indefinitely. There is no reason to destroy the roster’s wider progression merely to meet an expired race schedule.
Dark Dimension 9 timed-run rewards
After the first completion, the timed run awards:
- Additional shards to bring Annihilus to 7 Yellow Stars
- A 4-Red-Star promotion for Annihilus
- Further gear and progression resources
The second run should be faster because the 25-character investment already exists and Annihilus can strengthen eligible unrestricted content. Record difficult enemy waves during the first clear so important cooldowns are ready when the same problem returns.
How the Annihilus Saga Epilogue fits in
DD9 itself does not take Annihilus all the way to 7 Red Stars. Unlocking him opens the separate Annihilus Saga Epilogue:
- Nodes 1–2 require Annihilus at 5 Yellow Stars
- Nodes 3–5 require Annihilus at 7 Yellow Stars
- The later nodes award his 5th, 6th and 7th Red Stars
The practical order is first run, early Epilogue access, timed run, then the remaining Epilogue nodes. Do not mistake the Epilogue for an additional requirement to enter DD9.
DD9 battle preparation checklist
Before entering a new section:
- Verify that all five characters display the correct mission eligibility.
- Set Iso-8 classes for the intended team rather than copying a different game mode blindly.
- Review enemy speed, control effects, revives and priority targets inside the node.
- Enter easier waves with key ultimates available whenever possible.
- Stop an obviously failed attempt early if it wastes important cooldowns without meaningful progress.
- Record which enemy must be controlled or removed first on the next attempt.
Dark Dimension allows progress over repeated attacks. A controlled reset or partial clear is not failure; spending premium resources on the wrong five characters is the more expensive mistake.
Is Dark Dimension 9 worth starting immediately?
Start preparing immediately, but enter only when the first useful team is complete. Node rewards can help with later sections, yet promoting a weak City five solely to cross the entry line can leave the account with 25 expensive characters that have little use elsewhere.
The efficient route is sequential: finish a current City team, evaluate the live Cosmic and Global options, and keep the final Legendary/Epic/Mythic slots flexible. Our DD9 team recommendations turn that framework into a current shortlist for every section.
