The best MSF Dark Dimension 9 teams are not simply the five strongest eligible characters in each section. A good plan must survive the missions, spread Gear Tier 21 demand across several origins and avoid spending rare uniques on characters with no value elsewhere.
The recommendations below reflect the live roster available on August 26, 2026. New releases and reworks can change the best five, so treat each lineup as a current planning baseline rather than a permanent law.
Before choosing characters, read our MSF Dark Dimension 9 requirements guide. It maps all 16 missions, the GT21 entry gate and the Annihilus rewards. The broader Marvel Strike Force Dark Dimension guide covers DD1 through DD9.

| City | Venom, Toxin, Riot, Vulture, Hit-Monkey |
| Cosmic | Executioner, High Evolutionary, Minn-Erva, Thanos, Knull |

These lineups synthesize the mission rules in Scopely’s official DD9 announcement with current community recommendations from Marvel Church’s DD9 roster planner. Confirm every character in the in-game selection screen before equipping GT21 gear.
How we choose a DD9 character
Five filters matter:
- Mission eligibility: City, Cosmic and Global exclude Mythic, Epic and Legendary characters.
- Survival and control: Dark Dimension rewards healing, sustain, ability control, turn manipulation and reliable damage more than a short arena burst.
- Gear distribution: A lineup that needs five characters from one origin can take much longer than a slightly weaker mixed-origin team.
- Unique-piece conflicts: Two characters sharing a scarce unique can delay the full five.
- Value outside DD9: Current Raid, Arena, War and Crucible use makes a GT21 investment easier to justify.
Stars, Diamonds, Iso-8 and ability levels also change performance. The correct fifth character for your roster may be a strong alternative that is already built rather than a fashionable recommendation starting many upgrades behind.
Best City team for DD9 missions 3–5
Recommended City five
- Venom
- Toxin
- Riot
- Vulture
- Hit-Monkey
This team combines three Bio characters with one Tech and one Skill character. The origin spread is workable, but Venom and Toxin both use Alien Spores, so check that unique before committing to both.
Vulture and Hit-Monkey reduce pressure on Bio gear while keeping the lineup current. Riot adds another modern City option, but also competes for Bio origin pieces. If Bio is the account’s main bottleneck, replace one member before equipping the first GT21 item rather than discovering the conflict at four completed characters.
City alternatives
Useful alternatives include Daredevil (Modern), Silver Sable, Punisher, Spider-Man (Big Time), Phantom Rider, Hobgoblin, Superior Spider-Man, Shocker, Scorpion, Gwenpool and Squirrel Girl.
Choose the alternative that solves a resource or functionality problem. Punisher and Spider-Man (Big Time) can reduce the number of expensive origin pieces in some plans. A character already used by a current team can be more efficient than a nominally stronger DD-only promotion.
Best Cosmic team for DD9 missions 6–8
Recommended Cosmic five
- Executioner
- High Evolutionary
- Minn-Erva
- Thanos
- Knull
Cosmic spreads across Skill, Tech and Mystic origins. That diversity is useful after a Bio-heavy City build. Minn-Erva and High Evolutionary share Tech demand, while Thanos and Knull share Mystic demand, so inventory still matters.
This section is a good example of why old names should not be dismissed automatically. A veteran character can remain valuable when the kit supplies sustain or utility that works in long PvE battles. The question is whether that character is already developed enough to justify GT21 in the current account.
Cosmic alternatives
Franklin Richards, the MCU Fantastic Four characters, Warlock, Magik, Nova (Sam Alexander), Thanos (Endgame), Havok, Strange (Heartless), Hela and Kahhori are current alternatives.
Avoid selecting five alternatives from the same team without checking their individual DD performance. Mode-specific bonuses may not activate in Dark Dimension, and team synergy alone does not guarantee sustain across repeated enemy waves.
Best Global team for DD9 missions 9–11
Recommended Global five
- Quicksilver (Symbiote)
- Lady Deathstrike
- Daimon Hellstrom
- Hellcat
- Darkstar
The recommended five spreads across Bio, Tech, Mystic, Skill and Mutant. A one-per-origin shape is attractive because it limits direct competition for origin gear, although uniques and catalysts can still become bottlenecks.
Global appears after six restricted missions, so it may take time to reach. Do not lock this team too early if the meta is moving. Reserve materials for the strong core, then make the final promotion decisions when Cosmic is close to completion.
Global alternatives
Sentry, Maestro, Storm (Mighty), Yo-Yo, Songbird, Lady Bullseye, Living Mummy, Deadpool, Emma Frost (X-Men), Moon Girl, Jeff the Land Shark and Eclipse can fill gaps.
When two candidates are close, prefer the one already essential to a live Raid or Arena team. DD9 is finite; the rest of the game continues after Annihilus is unlocked.
Best Legendary or Villain Epic team for missions 12–13
Recommended specialist five
- Magneto (Phoenix Force)
- Omega Red (Phoenix Force)
- Omega Red
- Silver Surfer (Breaker)
- Old Man Logan
This section permits Legendary characters and Villain Epic characters. It also creates heavy Mutant demand in the recommended lineup, with several characters drawing from the same origin. Do not assume the strongest paper team is the fastest team to equip.
If Mutant gear is short, use the eligibility rule to diversify. Quasar, Blastaar, Thunderstrike, Shadow King, Juggernaut (Zombie), Scarlet Witch (Zombie), Kestrel (Zombie), Adam Warlock and Star-Lord are alternatives.
The Chapter Legends—Quasar, Blastaar and Thunderstrike—also connect to the optional Annihilus Saga. That wider value can justify an alternative even when raw DD performance is slightly lower.
Best Mythic or Hero Epic team for missions 14–15
Recommended final-section five
- Professor Xavier
- Odin
- Mephisto
- Blue Marvel
- Captain Britain
This is the premium roster section. Professor Xavier, Odin and Mephisto represent previous major progression investments, while Blue Marvel and Captain Britain provide Hero Epic access.
The lineup leans heavily on Mystic gear through Odin, Mephisto and Captain Britain. Check Uru, Arcane Magic and Focused Chi along with the origin pieces. A plan can look balanced at the character-class level while being blocked by one unique.
Mythic and Hero Epic alternatives
Apocalypse, Super Skrull, Dormammu and Doctor Doom remain relevant alternatives. They are expensive, but many established accounts already have them developed from earlier Dark Dimensions and other endgame modes.
Reusing a completed Mythic can be smarter than building a newer Hero Epic from scratch. Mission performance, gear remaining and outside utility should decide the slot—not the release date alone.
How to balance origin gear across 25 characters
Build a five-column resource map before equipping:
| Origin | Likely pressure points | Planning response |
|---|---|---|
| Bio | City core and several modern alternatives | Avoid carrying every Bio recommendation at once |
| Tech | City alternatives, Cosmic and Lady Deathstrike | Use lower-piece characters where performance remains adequate |
| Skill | Hit-Monkey, Executioner, Hellcat and alternatives | Preserve enough for later sections before finishing City |
| Mystic | Cosmic and the Mythic/Hero Epic finish | Keep final-section costs visible from day one |
| Mutant | Global plus a Mutant-heavy Legendary group | Diversify missions 12–13 if Mutant becomes the wall |
Do the same for uniques. Origin balance does not help if two essential characters wait for Alien Spores, Miasma or another shared unique.
Who should get GT21 first?
Use this order:
- A City character with strong use elsewhere
- The remainder of a functional City five
- Cosmic characters that do not consume the City bottleneck
- Global core characters with current cross-mode value
- Legendary/Epic choices once their section is approaching
- Mythic/Hero Epic characters after the exact unique and origin totals are known
Do not promote one character in all five sections and call the plan balanced. Each mission requires five eligible characters, so four incomplete teammates still block entry.
Common DD9 team-building mistakes
- Copying a list without checking inventory. Recommendations assume the gear can actually be obtained.
- Ignoring exclusions. A Mythic City character cannot enter a City mission that excludes Mythic characters.
- Overbuilding for the opening nodes. The unrestricted missions can reuse a restricted-section team.
- Equipping the final section first. City arrives earlier and should control the initial spending order.
- Chasing five damage dealers. Long missions reward sustain, cleanse, control and cooldown management.
- Forgetting the second run. A stable team can be better than a fragile lineup that produces one impressive attempt.
Are these DD9 teams future-proof?
No fixed lineup is future-proof in a live-service roster game. The mission traits and GT21 requirement are stable planning constraints, but new characters can improve a section before a long farm finishes.
Lock the obvious high-value investments, keep at least one flexible slot in later sections and recheck the official planner before every irreversible GT21 promotion. That approach produces a roster built for DD9 without sacrificing the rest of Marvel Strike Force to a snapshot of today’s meta.
